All about the 3-Day Diet
The Three-day
Diet, which is also known as the Fax diet, Army diet, Navy diet, Military diet,
Cleveland Clinic diet, etc., has no specific creator. No one knows exactly
when, where, and how it originated, but it has been circulating much before the
Internet came. The Three-day Diet is a strict diet and claims to help you
reduce up to 10 pounds in three days. Note that this is not a healthy weight
loss.
Since
there is no specific source of the Three-day Diet, it has various versions. All
these diets run for three days, during which you need to eat specific foods
that are extremely low-calorie. The foods may vary, but the duration is three
days. In one version, dieters drink only water for the first day, may eat fruit
and drink only fruit juice on the second day, and eat only vegetables and
vegetable juice on the third day.
The most
common version of the Three-day Diet is the following:
DAY 1
Breakfast:
1/2 grapefruit, 1 toast, 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1 cup coffee or tea (with
caffeine)
Lunch:
1/2 cup tuna, 1 toast, 1 cup coffee or tea (with caffeine)
Dinner:
3 ounces meat (any type), 1 cup green beans, 1/2 banana, 1 small apple, 1 cup
vanilla ice cream
DAY 2
Breakfast:
1 egg, 1 toast, 1/2 banana
Lunch: 1
cup cottage cheese, 1 hard-boiled egg, 5 saltine crackers
Dinner: 2
hot dogs (without bun), 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup
vanilla ice cream
DAY 3
Breakfast:
5 saltine crackers, 1 slice cheddar cheese, 1 small apple
Lunch: 1
egg, 1 toast
Dinner: 1
cup tuna, 1/2 banana, 1 cup vanilla ice cream
After
the three days, you need to eat your normal meals for at least four days. The
Three-day Diet can be repeated on a weekly basis. You are allowed to repeat the
diet as many times as you need to reach or maintain your target weight.
The Three-day
Diet is said to work by the specific combinations of these foods and some
versions allow no substitution. However, there are other versions where certain
substitutions are allowed to make the diet vegetarian or vegan-friendly. While
the diet plan lists coffee and tea, some versions allow you to drink anything.
Others allow only water and diet soda.
All the variations
of the Three-day Diet have some common guidelines. You can only use salt and
pepper to season your food. You cannot add fats when preparing food. Use the
diet for no more than three days at a stretch. If you need to reduce further
weight, add four regular-meal days in between to stretches of the diet.
The
Three-day Diet is said to be “chemically and enzyme balanced,” but this balance
is nowhere proven or explained. Some claim that caffeine increases body’s
metabolism and thus helps you burn fat and lose weight. Grapefruit is believed
to “kick start the liver into fat-burning mode.” Peanut butter, eggs, and tuna are
high-protein foods. It is believed by some proponents of the Three-day Diet
that proteins require more energy from the body to process, so they burn more
fat to digest. Similarly, some believe that high levels of calcium in fat cells
helps burning more fat. Pectin in apples limits the amount of fat being
absorbed.
